Cappuccino- The Kei Car

Japanese regulators introduced the 'Kei' class of vehicle in the early 1990s. This class allows owners to park vehicles on the street rather than renting a parking space, as is usual in Japan. To be eligible vehicles have to be less than 3.3m long and 1.4m wide, with engines less than 660cc and 47 kW. The most popular vehicles in this class are the Honda Beat and Suzuki Cappuccino.

What you get

Three-cylinder, DOHC, 12 valve, turbo charged, 657cc engine with multi-point injection and electronic spark advance. Seats upholstered synthetic leather, power windows, air conditioning,  steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake and projector type headlights. With the boot storing three hardtop sections the Cappo’s top has four modes, fully dropped, targa top,  T-top and full hard top. Clever huh?

Driving and owning

The free revving engine, 659 kg and the precise shifter, make the Cappuccino surprisingly responsive and give it a 0 to100kph time under 10 seconds. Not fast enough? Don’t worry, because with modifications there is potential for the power to be dramatically enhanced (see above picture). The 51 / 49 front/rear weight distribution and wishbone suspension endow the Cappuccino with good handling and the mix and match top is a bit of fun too. As per the K class brief, diminutive proportions allow you to park... almost anywhere.

Importdriver's choice

Choosing between this and a Beat? There is a reason we see more Cappo's in Australia, it’s more expensive but a much better car. Roomier, more features, better performance, (better looking?)…..
