| Powered
by a 2.4 litre four cylinder with
light pistons, ‘race’ camshafts and 150kW, the car featured a dual exhaust
system, 18-inch wheels and GT-R brakes. Here Nissan wanted the ‘true essence
of an affordable, reliable sportster’. A new interpretation of the Seventies
240Z seemed the way to go, the car, reemploying the 240Z's 'sugar scoop'
lights, short rear overhang and long wheelbase. The result was… well, reminiscent
of a weak 80's Porsche… so back to the drawing board. |

The
Really New Z Nissans new project is more ambitious, trying now to ‘recreate the sensation of a Formula 1 car’ the ‘new new Z’ borrows little of the old, and the result looks much more purposeful. The guards, now pumped well out, a gaping grille, long wheelbase and wide stance make it particularly muscular. The interior is simple and clean, plenty of metal including seats upholstered in a metal mesh. Features include satellite navigation and video display but retain some nostalgia including 240Z like, 3 pod gauges. |

| Powered
by a 3.5 litre V6 with between 195 and 225kW this rear wheel drive Z will
offer a choice of 5-speed auto or 6-speed manual and a 0-100 time under
6 seconds. The new Z looks and sounds exciting. But, with an intended price of only US $30,000 the 20-inch wheels shown here have little chance of making it to the production model, and with these gone the look is up to date, but not futuristic. It is suggested that even this may not be final version, but that relatively small changes will be made until production begins. US sale of the new Z is expected as early as mid 2002, whether Nissan intends a right hand drive version that we may eventually see in Australia is unknown. |
