4WD Cubed

The new Nissan Cube was recently revealed in Tokyo. This second-generation Cube provides more of the features that made the first-generation such a hit; compact quirky exterior and a spacious convenient interior. It also provides a peek at Nissans new 4WD system.

Creating a new tall wagon genre Cube 1 recorded sales of around 400,000 units. Cube 2 borrows it's platform of the new Nissan Micra and it's 3.75m long body includes laterally asymmetrical elements at the rear adding to it's already unique character.

If the factory Cube isn't distinctive enough, Autech has launched a new-generation 'Cube Rider' model. It features distinctive aero parts, a half-pipe grille, leather steering wheel, silver seat fabrics and bright instrument panel moldings.

Cube will however, not break any land speed records. It is powered by a 1.4L four cylinder, driving through a 4-speed auto or CVT with a 6-speed manual shift mode. So what makes Cube 2 so interesting?

It comes in 4WD! More precisely, Nissan's new compact, e-4WD. Engineered around a front-wheel-drive configuration it drives the rear wheels only when 4WD grip is required. The rear wheels are driven by a rear-mounted electric motor, hence the system does not need a drive shaft or a transfer case. The advantage over traditional 4WD is more interior space, less frictional losses and improved fuel economy.

Any guesses where we might see a similar system pop up in a performance car?

Evo Juice

Think your Evo's overly thirsty? You may well be right. Some Lancer Evos have been sucking down more fuel than they should due to a faulty oxygen sensor.

Mitsubishi has discovered the problem on numerous Evo V, VI and VIIs, which can produce excessive exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. Around 37,000 vehicles are being recalled.

Thirsty or not, Mitsubishi may introduce an Evolution VII wagon onto the Japanese market to compete with Subaru's performance lift-backs. Rumors of an Evo wagon however, may trace their origin to Ralliart's new Lancer Cedia GDI wagon.

The Cedia (Seedier?) GDI was recently released in two variants: A 97kW naturally aspirated 1.8L with an INVECS-III CVT, and an intercooled turbo variant with 123kW and an INVECS-II, 4 speed auto. Both are front wheel drivers and come with a host a Ralliart goodies including 16' wheels, sports seats, suspension, bracing and body-kit.

The turbo GDI can be yours for around $32,700 AUD, and the NA GDI for just $30,300... if you reside in Japan.
