Turbo Prado

Though Toyota Australia now offers us a turbo Prado, it’s still up to the import market to bring us the very desirable auto turbo Prado.

What you get

The gearbox in question has three ranges: 4WD low, 4WD high and 2WD high with each three speeds and overdrive. In standard Toyota fashion, electric windows, central locking, mirror controls, all lie to the driver’s right hand. Equipment includes; icy

air-conditioning, parking mirrors front and rear, tilting and sliding sunroof, climate control air-conditioning power selector step sides, stylish nudge bar and a 'clinometre'. This techno gismo displays pitch, roll, outside temperature, barometric pressure, altitude and compass bearing, several of these being recorded over 12 hours and displayed graphically. The Prado is a seven seater, back seats flipping up to the side and there are plenty of storage spots for drinks and books. The rear mounted spare is bolted directly to the single barn door - no need to peel the spare back before opening.

Driving and owning

Though boost fades quickly after 3000rpm there is no lag, the auto box changes at around 3500rpm and is so good that, with the beautifully quite cabin, it is tough to recognise this. The deep weather shields over side windows, obscuring the view of taller passengers. Overall though the Prado is roomy, fast and well-mannered… great to drive.

Importdriver's choice

It is not widely known that many off-roaders prefer an automatic gearbox. Going up the rough and steep stuff, the auto’s smooth power delivery can be the difference between maintaining traction and a clutch induced trip backwards. The big brother 100 series Land Cruiser is available in the same ‘auto turbo’ format. This vehicle shares a lot of the appeal of the ‘king off the road' and has much more equipment. For around $25,000 less, we’ll take the Prado.
