New Lexus Sport Coupe

First shown at the ‘99 Tokyo Motor Show, it has two doors, four seats and a retractable roof… it’s a Soarer with the lid off.

The coming Lexus Sport Coupe (SC) has four full sized seats, and an electronically retractable hard top similar to the current Benz SLK (and 1950s Fairlanes). At the push of a button the aluminium top is down in under 20 seconds. The shape, penned at Toyota’s Design house in Brussels is heavy, bull nosed and reserved.

It is the work of the designer of the Toyota Echo, who following Lexus tradition, has borrowed more than just the retractable roof from Benz. Styling the plush wood and leather clad but modern interior was the job of Toyota Japan.  Shorter and wider, the SC is the replacement for the Soarer/SC400, but, stretching the friendship, Toyota has also dubbed it the ‘spiritual successor to the Supra’. The engine in the concept is a new 4.3 litre, quad cam, V8 with Toyota’s variable valve timing - this is bolted to an adaptive 5-speed auto gearbox.
It is suggested, that first production models will not be V8’s but be powered by a 3.0-litre six, with 170kW and possibly a 250kW turbo version. Whatever the choice of engine, the SC has handling potential, with 18’ wheels, 245/40ZR18 ‘run flat’ tyres and the rear wheel drive, double wishbone set up of the current model. In ‘99 Toyota Australia thought it would be selling the New SC by early this year... now it looks more likely to take to the road in Japan in early 2002.
