Supra - Rear Wheel Drive King

 

Nissan's GT-R may be a prince among 4WDs, but Supra reigns over the RWD domain with few rivals.
If you need antisocial levels of performance at a reasonable price, but can do without boy-racer looks, then Toyota's fastest ever production car is for you.  Up-to-date, individual styling, and the Herculean presence only a big coupe can provide, the twin turbo combines phenomenal handling with on-tap acceleration.
 




What You Get

A choice of a 168 kW naturally aspirated three litre six or sequential twin turbos at 208 kW.  Alloy double wishbone suspension all round, traction control, climate control air-conditioning, large vented disk brakes with ABS at each corner. Electric seat, wrap around driver centered dash and a leather wrapped steering wheel. Rear seats for kids or one adult (short trips only).

Options include a removable targa roof or aero top, cruise control, drop down front spoiler lip and large rear spoiler, though the rear spoiler is so common that it’s almost standard.

Driving and Owning

The Supra's sophisticated and well-balanced suspension provides a rear wheel driving experience second to none, including expensive Europeans.  Overzealous entry to a corner will see the car under steer mildly, but back off and it holds its line well. Accelerating through the exit the wide rear tires make power over steer surprisingly difficult to achieve. That said, push too hard on a tight wet bend in the turbo, and not even the traction control will save you.

At around 1550kgs, Supra is big and most at home at high speed on open bends, though it is deceptively nimble for its size on tighter tracks. The seats are supportive and driving position comfortable. A minor gripe; the drivers door armrest is too low to be comfortable for drivers without ape-length forearms.

 

Importdriver's Choice

The twin turbo, though more expensive is well worth the extra dollars.  In automatic guise, the naturally aspirated version's acceleration is disappointing, though the manual five-speed can be brisk if revs are kept high.  The twin turbo however is effortless in either automatic or six speed manual, with 100 up in 6.2 seconds for the auto and slightly quicker in the manual.  Call it sacrilege, but for the daily drive to work as well as exhilaration on weekends, we can't go past the auto twin turbo.
