Toyota Supra MkV

March 2000 saw the release of pictures of the new Mk.V Supra, sadly that may be all we'll see.

Unlike the new Celica, the new Supra shape was a direct descendant of the current MkIV model. It retained a high waist-line, bulging guards, prominent rear wing and narrow rear end, even details such as the front and rear brake ducts were similar. But departing from the smooth curves of the Mk.V, the new shape incorporated more angular elements, something it shared with the new Celica.

No technical details were available, but it seemed Toyota intended retaining the 2JZ-GTE engine with a rumoured power increase from 208kW to around 300kW. Such power in line with the prospective R35 GT-R, among others set to break the long standing 208kW limit. The new car was not due for release until 2003, if at all. Sadly, Toyotas performance mantle may have been handed over to their prestige brand Lexus, in the form of the reserved looking Lexus SC 430.

Rivals or brothers? The Mk.V Supra and R35 GT-R
